What to Send a New Mum on Delivery Day (Flowers, Chocolates & More)
The baby gets plenty of presents. Here is what to send the person who just gave birth — and how to get it to her, even from another country.

When a baby arrives, almost every gift is for the baby. A delivery-day gift is different: it is for the mum, to say "well done" and to make the first days a little easier. It doesn't need to be big. The best ones are things she can use in a hospital bed or on the sofa at 3 a.m.
Delivery-day gift ideas for a new mum
| Gift | Why it helps | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Flowers or a bouquet | The classic congratulations | Some maternity wards don't allow flowers — check, or send them home |
| A box of chocolates | A treat that keeps and can be shared with visitors | Pick something easy to open one-handed |
| A snack hamper | Feeding a baby is hungry work | Snacks she can eat with one hand are best |
| Nuts and dried fruit | A filling snack that keeps | Check for allergies first |
| Cosy slippers | Hospital floors and night feeds | Non-slip soles |
| A soft robe | Comfort for visitors and night feeds | Front-opening suits breastfeeding |
| Big water bottle with a straw | Easy to drink from lying down | Handy for breastfeeding mums |
| Extra-long phone charger cable | Hospital sockets are often far from the bed | Check which plug her phone uses |
| Self-care set | A small moment just for her | Gentle, unscented products are a safe choice |
Can you send flowers to the hospital?
Sometimes. Rules differ from hospital to hospital, and some maternity wards and neonatal units don't accept flowers at all. Ask the partner or a close relative before sending anything to the ward. When in doubt, have flowers and gifts delivered to the parents' home for when they arrive — they will enjoy them more there anyway.
Sending a gift from another country
Buy from a store in the parents' country, not your own, so it arrives quickly and without customs fees. On our delivery-day gifts list you can switch the country to theirs: each idea then opens a search on Amazon there, or on the big local store where Amazon doesn't sell. Ask the parents (or the partner) for the delivery address and a good day, and add a short message at checkout.
When to send it
- Wait for the news: send after the baby is born and the parents have shared it, not before.
- For the hospital: only small things, and only if the ward allows them.
- For home: the first week or two is ideal, when visits slow down and the tiredness sets in.
Gifts for the baby, too
If you would like to give something for the baby as well, ask whether the parents have a registry. On Diaper Reveal's free baby registry, guests mark what they're buying so nobody doubles up, and gift links open a store in the parents' own country. If you still have a party to plan, see our baby shower decorations list and thank-you chocolates and favour boxes.
Our shopping lists don't sell anything or show prices — each idea is a search on a store in the country you choose. Some links are affiliate links, so the store may pay us a small commission; your price doesn't change.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good delivery-day gift for a new mum?
Something for her rather than the baby: flowers, a box of chocolates or snacks, cosy slippers or a soft robe, and practical comfort items like a big water bottle with a straw and an extra-long phone cable.
What can I send a new mum in hospital?
Small, practical things: snacks, a water bottle, a long phone cable, lip balm or slippers. Check first before sending flowers, because some maternity wards don't allow them.
How do I send a gift to a new mum in another country?
Buy from a store in the parents' country so it is delivered locally: choose their country on the delivery-day gifts list and each idea opens a search in a store there.
When should I send a gift after the birth?
After the parents have shared the news. Small things can go to the hospital if allowed; anything else is best sent home in the first week or two.
