Halloween Gender Reveal Ideas: 25 Spooky-Sweet Ideas

Pumpkins, costumes and a sweet little secret. Here are ideas for a spooky-cute reveal in your living room, plus how to bring in the grandparents who are a plane ride away.

If your anatomy scan lands in September or October, Halloween hands you a party theme for free. Everyone already owns a costume, the shops are full of pumpkins, and "Boo or Blue?" practically writes the invitation for you. The trick is keeping it cute rather than creepy, and making sure the reveal itself is the moment people remember, not the decorations.

Below are 25 ideas grouped by type. Pick one reveal method, one or two games and a food idea or two. That is plenty for a party that lasts an hour or two.

Pumpkin gender reveal ideas

Pumpkins are the easiest Halloween reveal because the inside is hidden until someone opens it. Ask a friend or relative to set it up so you are surprised too.

1. The stuffed pumpkin

Hollow out a pumpkin, fill it with pink or blue tissue paper, sweets or small balloons, and put the lid back on. The parents lift the lid together. Supplies: one large pumpkin, a knife for the adult doing the carving, filler in the right colour.

2. Carve the answer

The secret keeper carves "BOY" or "GIRL" (or a bow or a bow tie) into the back of the pumpkin. At the reveal, the parents turn it around. Put a battery tea light inside rather than a candle, so it glows safely indoors and around kids in costume.

3. Paint-drip pumpkins

Line up small white pumpkins. Guests guess by placing a pink or blue sticker on one. The final pumpkin gets a pour of pink or blue paint over the top, done by the parents, and everyone sees who guessed right.

4. Pumpkin smash

Fill a pumpkin with coloured confetti or paper shreds and let the parents drop it onto a tarp. Messy, fast and very photogenic. Choose biodegradable confetti so the yard clean-up is not a week-long job.

5. Pumpkin patch hunt

Hide a dozen mini pumpkins around the garden. One of them has a sticker underneath in the reveal colour. Whoever finds it gets to announce the answer. Great if lots of children are coming.

6. The cauldron

The secret keeper hides a few spoons of baking soda mixed with pink or blue food colouring at the bottom of a plastic cauldron. The parents pour in vinegar with a squirt of dish soap and it foams up in the reveal colour. Cheap, safe, and it looks like a potion.

"Boo or Blue" and other Halloween themes

A good theme name does half the decorating for you. It goes on the invitation, a banner, the cake topper and the voting board.

7. The Boo or Blue voting wall

Draw two big ghosts on a board, one labelled "Boo" (girl) and one "Blue" (boy). Guests write their name on a sticky note and put it on their ghost as they arrive. You get a snapshot of who guessed what before the answer is out.

8. Witch hats and bow ties

Hand out a pink witch hat or a blue bow tie at the door and let guests wear their guess. It makes the photos instantly readable later.

9. Spell book of predictions

A thrift-shop book dressed up as a spell book, where guests write their gender guess, a name suggestion and a wish for the baby. It becomes a keepsake you actually read again.

Trick-or-treat reveal ideas

10. Trick-or-treat doors

Set up three decorated doors or boxes. Kids knock and get a treat behind each one. The last door hides the reveal: pink or blue sweets, a balloon or a sign.

11. Candy bucket reveal

The parents are handed two identical plastic pumpkin buckets with lids. One is empty, one is full of wrapped sweets in the reveal colour. They open the full one on the count of three and toss the sweets to the guests.

12. Trick or treat quiz

Each correct answer to a question about the parents earns a treat; each wrong one earns a silly trick, like doing their best witch cackle. The overall winner gets to open the reveal. Our quiz list has questions you can borrow.

Halloween costume ideas for the parents and guests

13. Parents' couple costume

Classic pairings that play on the bump: a pea pod and a gardener, a mama bear and papa bear, a pumpkin and a farmer, or a skeleton shirt with a tiny skeleton printed on the bump. Keep it comfortable. The pregnant parent will be on their feet for a while.

14. Team costumes

Ask guests to come dressed in pink or blue for their guess: a pink witch, a blue superhero, a pink ghost. The costume contest winner can be the one who opens the reveal.

15. Costume change for the dog

If you have a calm pet, a helper can walk them out in a pink or blue costume as the reveal. Only do this if your pet genuinely tolerates clothes and crowds.

16. Siblings reveal in costume

Older siblings trick-or-treat at the front door and, when it opens, hold up a sign: "I'm going to be a big sister to a baby BROTHER." Children love being in on the secret, but only tell them at the last minute.

Halloween gender reveal food ideas

17. Pumpkin cake with a coloured centre

A pumpkin-shaped cake frosted orange, with pink or blue sponge or sprinkles inside. The bakery can be given the sealed envelope directly so nobody in the family knows.

18. Ghost cupcakes

White marshmallow ghosts on top, a pink or blue filling hidden inside. Everyone bites at once on the count of three.

19. Mummy hot dogs and "Boo"-berry punch

Not reveals on their own, but crowd-pleasers that fit the theme: pastry-wrapped sausages with little eyes, and a berry punch. Serve the punch in a clear bowl and have the parents drop in a colour cube or syrup at reveal time.

20. Candy apple guess

Dip apples in white chocolate. One apple on the tray has pink or blue coloured chocolate hidden under the white coating. Whoever picks it announces the answer.

21. Spooky snack board

A graze board split down the middle: pink snacks on one side, blue on the other, with orange and black treats in between. Guests fill a cup from the side they are betting on.

Confetti, smoke and staying safe

Halloween makes people think of smoke and sparks. Skip them. Gender reveal fireworks, smoke devices and explosive targets have caused real wildfires and injuries, and autumn is often dry. You do not need anything that burns or explodes to get a great reaction.

  • Use a biodegradable confetti cannon or a confetti popper. Spring-loaded or compressed-air cannons give the same burst of colour with no flame.
  • Avoid pyrotechnics entirely, including coloured smoke grenades, sparklers and fireworks, even if they are sold locally.
  • Use battery tea lights in pumpkins, especially with children in costumes nearby.
  • Balloons and bubbles are fine, but pick up popped balloon pieces so wildlife and small children can't swallow them.

Halloween reveal ideas for family who live far away

October is not an easy month for everyone to travel, and plenty of families are spread across cities or countries. You can still include them properly rather than propping a phone against the fruit bowl.

22. Mail a pumpkin kit

Send distant relatives a small parcel: a mini pumpkin, a sealed envelope marked "open on the call" and a pink or blue sticker for their guess. Everyone opens their envelope at the same moment on the video call. Only do this with people who can resist peeking.

23. Costume video call

Ask everyone joining from home to wear a costume or at least a hat in their guess colour. Screenshots of the grid make a fun keepsake.

24. Remote Boo or Blue vote

On the count of three, everyone types their guess in the chat at the same time so nobody copies. Screenshot it before the reveal.

25. Hosting it online with Diaper Reveal

If you want distant family to play rather than just watch, this is what we built. Diaper Reveal is a free browser game: guests join from their own phones with a link or a 6-letter code, with no app and no sign-up. Everyone plays a roughly one-minute 3D race and, if you switch it on, a quiz about the parents. The champion reveals the sealed answer live in front of everyone. Guests who turn their camera on can record a short message for the baby, and afterwards the host gets a memory video of about a minute, made automatically and sent by email. You can run the party in any of 24 languages, which helps when grandparents speak a different one.

To be honest about what it isn't: the game does not have a Halloween skin. The spooky part is up to you, with costumes on camera, a pumpkin on the table and a Boo or Blue banner behind you. It works well alongside the in-person ideas above: put the host screen on the TV in the living room while remote guests join from their phones.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Halloween gender reveal theme?

Popular themes are "Boo or Blue?", "What Will Our Little Pumpkin Be?", "Witch Way Will It Go?" and "Bows or Bats?". Pick one name and use it on the invitation, banner, cake and voting board.

How do you do a pumpkin gender reveal?

Hollow out a pumpkin and fill it with pink or blue tissue paper, sweets, balloons or biodegradable confetti, or carve the answer into the back. A trusted friend prepares it so the parents are surprised when they open or turn it.

Is it safe to use smoke or fireworks for a Halloween gender reveal?

We recommend avoiding them. Gender reveal fireworks and smoke devices have caused wildfires and injuries. A biodegradable confetti cannon, balloons or a cake give the same surprise without anything that burns or explodes.

How can family who live far away join a Halloween gender reveal?

Mail them a small reveal kit to open on a video call, ask them to join in costume, or host the reveal as an online game such as Diaper Reveal, where each guest plays from their own phone and the winner reveals the answer live.

When should you have a Halloween gender reveal?

Any weekend in October works, and it doesn't have to be on 31 October itself. Many families pick the weekend before, when guests aren't already busy with trick-or-treating.
