Christmas Gender Reveal Ideas: 24 Festive Ideas

The whole family is thinking about gifts anyway. Here's how to turn the biggest one of the year into a reveal, whether everyone is round the tree or scattered across time zones.

A Christmas gender reveal has one huge advantage: the setting already does the work. There are gifts to unwrap, ornaments to hang and relatives who are already gathered, or at least on the phone. It also has one real complication. The holidays are exactly when some of your family can't be there: flights are expensive, work doesn't stop everywhere, and some people spend Christmas with the other side of the family.

So this list covers both: 24 ideas for the room, and a practical section for the people who will be watching from somewhere else.

Which day works best?

Christmas Day itself is tempting because everyone is already together, but it is also the busiest day of the year. The reveal has to compete with the meal, the gifts, the washing-up and three phone calls to other relatives. A few alternatives are worth considering:

  • Christmas Eve, when many families have a calmer evening together, or the main celebration in their tradition.
  • A weekend in early December, before travel starts, if you want the news to shape everyone's holiday shopping.
  • The quiet days between Christmas and New Year, when people are relaxed, off work and happy to join a video call.

Ornament gender reveal ideas

1. The last ornament on the tree

Decorate the tree together and leave one box unopened. Inside is a pink or blue ornament, or a personalised one reading "Baby Girl 2027" or "Baby Boy 2027". The parents hang it last. It stays on your tree every year after.

2. Fillable clear baubles

Clear plastic baubles filled with pink or blue tinsel, paper shreds or pompoms. Hand one to each guest in a small wrapped box, and everyone opens theirs at the same time.

3. Pick-an-ornament guess

Set out a bowl of pink and blue ornaments. Each guest hangs one on a small tabletop tree as their guess. At the end, you can see at a glance which way the family leaned.

Gift and stocking reveal ideas

4. The balloon box under the tree

A big wrapped box that releases pink or blue balloons when opened. Label it "Open last" so it's the final present of the day. Helium balloons in a sealed box need to be packed shortly before opening.

5. Gift for the grandparents

Wrap a baby outfit, a tiny pair of shoes or a baby book in the reveal colour and give it to the grandparents-to-be. Film their faces rather than the gift.

6. Stocking surprise

Hang a tiny baby stocking alongside the others. On Christmas morning it's filled with pink or blue sweets, or a note that says "It's a girl" or "It's a boy".

7. Secret Santa reveal

If your family already does Secret Santa, slip in one extra gift with no name on it. Whoever opens it finds the answer and announces it to everyone.

8. The advent calendar countdown

Make a small calendar with one door per day leading up to the party. Early doors hold clues and baby facts; the final one holds the reveal. Good for siblings who can't wait.

Christmas themes and decorations

ThemeIdeas to go with it
He or She, What Will Baby Be?Classic red, pink and blue, a guessing board by the tree
Jingle Bells, Boy or Girl?Little bells for each guest to ring after the reveal
Snowflake or Snowman?Pink snowflakes vs blue snowmen for team guesses
The Best Gift of AllEverything gift-wrapped, the reveal is the last present
Santa's Little Helper Is On the WayElf hats in pink or blue, a note from "the North Pole"

9. Team elf hats

Guests pick a pink or blue elf hat on arrival and wear their guess. Every photo from the day shows who was right.

10. Letter from Santa

Older siblings receive a letter "from the North Pole" announcing they're going to be a big brother or big sister to a baby boy or girl. Their reaction is the reveal.

11. Christmas card reveal

Design your holiday card with the answer on it, and hand out sealed copies to open together at the party. Later, post the same card to everyone who couldn't come.

Christmas food reveal ideas

12. Yule log with a coloured filling

A chocolate yule log rolled around pink or blue cream. Give the sealed envelope to the baker so nobody at home knows. The first slice is the reveal.

13. Gingerbread babies

Plain gingerbread figures, and guests decorate them in their guess colour. At reveal time, the parents break open one filled or iced in the real answer.

14. Hot chocolate bar

Mugs of white hot chocolate for everyone. The parents stir in a coloured marshmallow or a drop of food colouring from a sealed pot, and the drink turns pink or blue.

15. Cracker reveal

Christmas crackers are already on the table in many homes. Swap the paper hats in a few for pink or blue ones, or replace the joke with the answer, and pull them together after dinner.

16. Candy cane hunt

Hide candy canes around the house. One has a pink or blue ribbon. The child who finds it gets to announce the news.

Games for a holiday reveal

17. Christmas quiz about the parents

Ten questions such as "What was the first Christmas present they bought each other?" or "Who puts the tree up earlier?" The winner opens the reveal box.

18. Name that carol, baby edition

Hum carols or play the first seconds, and teams guess. Change a few lyrics to baby words for bonus points.

19. White elephant with a twist

Play your usual gift swap, but one parcel contains the reveal. Everyone wants to steal it, and nobody knows why until it's opened.

A safe word on sparkle

Christmas and New Year come with sparklers and fireworks, but leave them out of the reveal. Gender reveal fireworks and smoke devices have caused real wildfires and injuries. If you want a burst of colour, use a biodegradable confetti cannon or popper, and keep real candles away from wrapping paper and trees.

When family can't travel for the holidays

This is the most common situation of all, and it doesn't need to feel like second prize. A grandparent watching a blurry phone propped against the gravy boat is not really included. These ideas give distant relatives a real part to play.

20. Parcel to open on the call

Post a small wrapped box with an ornament in the reveal colour inside, marked "Do not open until the call." Everyone unwraps at the same moment. Send it early: holiday post is slow.

21. Pick a time that suits the farthest person

Christmas morning in one country is Christmas Eve in another. Choose the moment that works for whoever is most time zones away, even if it means doing the reveal before or after the main meal.

22. Give them a job

Ask a distant grandparent to do the countdown, read the quiz questions, or be the one who says "Open it!" People feel included when they have a role, not just a screen.

23. Record their messages

Ask everyone who can't be there to record a short message for the baby. Play them before the reveal, or keep them for the baby's first Christmas.

24. Host the reveal as an online game

If you want everyone, near and far, to take part in the same way, Diaper Reveal is the free game we made for exactly this. Guests join from their own phones with a link or a 6-letter code: no app, no sign-up. Everyone plays a roughly one-minute 3D race and, if you turn it on, a quiz about the parents. The champion reveals the sealed answer live. Guests with their camera on can record a message for the baby, and afterwards the host receives a memory video of about a minute, made automatically and sent by email. The party can run in any of 24 languages.

There's no Christmas theme inside the game itself, so the festive part comes from you: jumpers on camera, the tree behind you, the hot chocolate in hand. And since everyone plays on their phone, it works just as well for relatives in the room as for those joining from another country.

Frequently asked questions

How do you do a Christmas gender reveal?

Pick one reveal method, such as a last ornament for the tree, a balloon box under the tree, a stocking or a yule log with a coloured filling, and have a trusted person prepare it from the sealed result. Add one or two games and make the reveal the last gift of the day.

What is a good Christmas gender reveal theme?

Popular themes include "He or She, What Will Baby Be?", "Jingle Bells, Boy or Girl?", "Snowflake or Snowman?" and "The Best Gift of All".

How can family who can't travel for Christmas join the reveal?

Post them a small reveal parcel to open on a video call, choose a time that suits the farthest time zone, give them a role like the countdown, or host the reveal as an online game such as Diaper Reveal, where everyone plays from their own phone.

Should we do the gender reveal on Christmas Day itself?

It can work well because family is already together, but it can also get lost among everything else. Many families choose Christmas Eve or a quieter day between Christmas and New Year when people are relaxed and available.

Are sparklers or fireworks a good idea for a Christmas gender reveal?

No. Gender reveal fireworks and smoke devices have caused wildfires and injuries. Use a biodegradable confetti cannon, balloons or a coloured cake instead.
