How the baby name generator works
Choose girl, boy or unisex, then add as many filters as you like: a starting letter (handy if you want to honour someone, or match a sibling's initial), a length, and a style. The generator shows the matching names in order of popularity; tap "Surprise me" to shuffle them and see names you'd never have scrolled down to. Tap the heart on any name to add it to your shortlist.
Your shortlist is saved only in this browser, on this device. We don't have accounts, and nothing you pick is sent to us. Clear your browser data and the list is gone, so jot down the ones you really love.
Where the names come from
The English list is the US Social Security Administration's national baby-name data for births in 2024 — the top 1,000 names for girls and the top 1,000 for boys, with their official rank. It's public-domain government data built from Social Security card applications, so it reflects the names parents actually chose, not a list someone made up. Spellings are exactly as they appear in the data.
Unisex names are the ones given to at least 500 US babies in 2024 where each sex accounts for at least a quarter of them — names like Riley, Parker, River and Charlie.
What we don't show is just as deliberate: there are no name meanings or origins here. Our source doesn't include them, and the meanings that circulate online are often disputed or simply invented. If a name's meaning matters to you, look it up in a proper etymology dictionary or ask the family it comes from.
What "classic", "modern" and "rare" mean here
They are rules on the official numbers, not our opinion. Rare: ranked below 500 in 2024 — real names you'll seldom meet in a classroom. Classic: in the top 500 today and already in the top 1,000 back in 1960, so it has been in use for generations. Modern: in the top 500 today but not in the 1960 top 1,000 — a name that rose more recently.
Popularity isn't good or bad. Some parents love a name that everyone recognises; others would rather their child be the only one in the class. The rank next to each name helps you decide which camp you're in.
How to choose a baby name
Say it out loud — first name, middle name and surname together — and shout it across a park, because you will. Check the initials, and think about the nicknames people will make whether you like them or not. Picture it on a toddler and on a 40-year-old.
Consider spelling: an unusual spelling makes a name distinctive, but it also means a lifetime of correcting people. Look at how the name sits next to siblings' names. And give it time. Many couples keep a running shortlist for weeks, cross names off, and find that one keeps coming back. That's usually the one.
Family traditions and naming
Plenty of families pass names down: a grandparent's name as a middle name, a father's name with "Jr.", or a name chosen to honour someone who has died. Others follow religious or cultural customs, or pick a name that works in two languages so every grandparent can say it. Talk about these expectations early — it's easier than disappointing someone after the birth announcement.
Some couples keep the name a secret until the baby arrives, so no one can talk them out of it. Others love getting everyone involved. Both are fine; just agree on which one you're doing before the group chat finds out.
Naming around your gender reveal
If you don't know the sex yet, keep two shortlists — this generator makes that easy with the girl and boy filters and one set of favourites. Then let the reveal decide which list you're working from.
With Diaper Reveal, the reveal can also kick off the naming. After the big moment, your party's recap room stays open: family and friends suggest names, everyone votes on the ones they like, and you can pick the winner — or just enjoy the debate. It's a free online gender reveal party that your whole family joins from their phones on live video.
Baby name generator FAQ
Where do these baby names come from?
From the US Social Security Administration's national data for babies born in 2024: the top 1,000 girls' names and top 1,000 boys' names, with official ranks. It's public-domain government data, so every name is one real parents chose.
What do classic, modern and rare mean?
Rare means ranked below 500 in 2024. Classic means in today's top 500 and already in the top 1,000 in 1960. Modern means in today's top 500 but not in the 1960 top 1,000. They're rules on the official data, not opinions.
Why don't you show name meanings?
Because our source doesn't include them, and many meanings found online are disputed or made up. We'd rather show nothing than something untrue. An etymology dictionary is the place to check a meaning.
How are unisex names chosen?
A name counts as unisex here if at least 500 US babies got it in 2024 and each sex made up at least 25% of them — for example Riley, Parker, River and Charlie.
Are my favorite names saved?
Yes, but only in this browser on this device (local storage). Nothing is sent to us, there's no account, and clearing your browser data deletes the list.
When should we decide on a name?
There's no deadline before birth, but birth registration rules vary by country and state, so check how long you have. Many parents shortlist during pregnancy and decide once they meet the baby.
Can my family help choose the name?
Yes. At a Diaper Reveal party, after the reveal your recap room lets guests suggest names and vote on them, and you can pick the winner. The final say is always yours.
Is this baby name generator free?
Completely free, with no sign-up. It runs in your browser and works on any phone.

Throw a free online reveal party: everyone joins from their phones on live video, votes boy or girl, sees the reveal together — then suggests and votes on names in your recap room. No app, no account.
