Gender Reveal When You Don't Know the Gender Yourself

The best reveals are the ones where the parents scream too. Here's how to keep the secret from yourselves until the very last second.

Plenty of parents want to find out with their family, not before them. That means someone else has to know first, and that person has to keep a secret. Here's how families usually handle it, and where it tends to go wrong.

Step 1: Ask for the result in a sealed envelope

At the scan or when the blood-test result comes in, tell the sonographer or clinic you don't want to know, and ask them to write the result down and seal it. Most are used to the request. Don't open it, don't hold it up to the light, and put it somewhere you won't be tempted.

Step 2: Choose one secret keeper

Pick one trusted person to open the envelope: a best friend, a sibling, a grandparent who can keep a straight face. The fewer people who know, the less likely it slips out. Good secret keepers:

  • Aren't going to be asked about it every day by the parents.
  • Don't post much on social media.
  • Can organise the reveal (the balloon, the cake, or the online party) without needing to ask you questions that give it away.

Step 3: Let the secret keeper set up the reveal

For an in-person reveal, the secret keeper orders the cake or fills the box. For an online reveal with family far away, there's a neater way: with Diaper Reveal, the host creates the party and sends a private secret keeper link to whoever knows. They open it and enter the gender, which is sealed on the server. It is never sent to anyone's phone, including the parents', until the moment of the reveal.

The parents then play the party with everyone else (a short race, a quiz about them, messages for the baby) and find out at the same second as the whole family. Their reaction ends up in the memory video too.

Frequently asked questions

Can the parents find out at the same time as the guests?

Yes. Ask the clinic for the result in a sealed envelope and give it to one trusted secret keeper. On Diaper Reveal, the host sends that person a private link to enter the gender; it stays sealed on the server until the live reveal, so the parents find out with everyone.

Who should be the secret keeper?

One trusted person who can keep a straight face and organise the reveal without asking you questions: often a best friend, sibling or grandparent.

Will the clinic write the gender in an envelope?

Most sonographers and clinics are used to the request. Say so at the start of the scan and ask them to seal the result.
