Baby Registry and Black Friday: What to Add Before the Sales

Late November is when a lot of the expensive baby gear goes on sale. A registry that's ready before then lets you, and anyone buying for you, catch it.

Black Friday falls on the last Friday of November, and Cyber Monday follows three days later. For many families expecting a baby in winter or spring, that weekend is the cheapest moment of the year to buy the big things: a stroller, a car seat, a cot, a monitor. The catch is that a sale only helps if you already know what you want. A baby registry made in October or early November is that list.

Have the registry ready by mid-November

Shops often start their offers a week or more before the Friday itself. If your registry is finished by mid-November, you have time to compare models, and relatives who like to buy in the sales know exactly what to look for. Share the link before the weekend, not during it.

  1. Early November: add the big items first, the ones where a sale makes the biggest difference.
  2. Mid-November: share the registry with family, so the people who plan to give a big gift can watch for offers.
  3. The sale weekend: buy what you want for yourselves, and mark it as I have it so nobody else buys it too.
  4. After the sales: look at what's left and decide what is still needed before the baby arrives.

Which items are worth waiting for

The most useful items to watch are the expensive ones that you will buy anyway and that don't need to be tried on a growing baby. In most homes that means:

  • Stroller or pram, and a travel system if you want one.
  • Car seat that meets the safety standard of the country where you will drive. A seat bought abroad on sale may not be legal at home.
  • Cot, crib or bedside sleeper, and a firm mattress that fits it exactly.
  • Baby monitor, if you plan to use one.
  • High chair, which you won't need for about six months but which is often cheaper in the sales than later.
  • Breast pump or bottle steriliser, if you already know you will use them.

What not to stock up on

A sale makes it tempting to buy a lot at once. Some things are better bought later or in small amounts:

  • Newborn clothes in bulk. Babies grow out of the smallest size in a few weeks, and you will be given clothes.
  • Lots of one nappy size. You don't yet know which brand fits your baby, or how fast they will move up a size.
  • Gadgets you're not sure about. If you can't say when you would use it, leave it off.

Stop duplicate gifts during the sales

The sale weekend is when two aunts buy the same stroller. A registry fixes this only if people mark what they bought, and if you mark what you bought for yourselves. On a Diaper Reveal registry, guests mark an item as bought when they choose it, and you can tap I have it on anything you bought yourself, so it stops showing as needed.

If your family lives in another country

Relatives abroad can still shop the sales for you. The simplest way is to link each item to a shop that delivers to your address, so they buy it there and have it sent straight to you. Our guide to a baby registry when family lives abroad explains how to set that up country by country.

Frequently asked questions

When is Black Friday?

Black Friday is the Friday after the fourth Thursday of November (US Thanksgiving), and Cyber Monday is the Monday after it. Many shops in other countries run offers on the same days.

Should I make my baby registry before Black Friday?

Yes, if your baby is due in the winter or spring. A registry finished by mid-November lets you compare models before the sales and lets family know what to look for.

What baby items are worth buying on Black Friday?

The expensive things you will buy anyway: stroller, car seat, cot or crib and mattress, baby monitor and high chair. Skip bulk newborn clothes and lots of one nappy size.

How do I stop people buying the same gift in the sales?

Use a registry where guests mark what they bought, and mark anything you bought yourselves. On Diaper Reveal you tap I have it, and the item stops showing as needed.
