Short answer: keep it calm and let the animal opt in. Use a coloured bandana or tag they already tolerate, a coloured toy or bowl, a sealed card they sit near, or a photo taken at their own pace. Avoid loud bangs, powders, food that may be unsafe for pets, and anything they dislike wearing. Then share the result with family through one link or 6-letter code, so everyone finds out at the same moment. If you are unsure about anything your pet will touch or eat, ask your vet.

Safety first: what to leave out

  • No loud bangs. Poppers, cannons and fireworks can frighten animals. Choose quiet reveals.
  • No powders, smoke or dyes near your pet's nose, eyes, mouth or coat unless your vet has said they are fine.
  • No unsafe food. Do not feed a pet cake, icing or sweets made for people. If you want a pet treat in pink or blue, ask your vet what is suitable.
  • No forced costumes. If your pet pulls away, shakes it off or freezes, stop. A calm animal is the whole point.
  • Keep it short. A few minutes with breaks, in a familiar room, beats a long shoot.
  • Have a quiet space ready where your pet can leave whenever it wants.

10 gentle pet gender reveal ideas

  1. A coloured bandana or collar tag. Only if your pet already wears one happily. Put it on just before the photo and take it off right after.
  2. A sealed card by the food bowl. Someone else writes the result inside an envelope; you open it with your pet sitting nearby, relaxed.
  3. A coloured blanket reveal. Your pet's usual bed, with a pink or blue throw folded underneath that you lift at the end. No noise, no surprise for the pet.
  4. A coloured toy. Pass a pink or blue toy from a sealed bag. If your pet loves toys, the play is the reveal.
  5. Paw print on paper. With pet-safe, washable ink made for animals, or a drawn paw outline, if your pet is happy to be handled. Ask your vet if unsure.
  6. A sign beside your pet. "Big brother" or "Big sister" on a card leaning next to a sleeping or sitting dog or cat. The pet only has to be there.
  7. A coloured bowl swap. Replace the water bowl with a pink or blue one at the moment of the reveal.
  8. A balloon on the wall, not the floor. Tie a coloured balloon high out of reach. Never let a pet chew or pop it, as bits can be a hazard. Skip it with nervous animals.
  9. A photo with the scan. Put the ultrasound picture and your pet in one frame, then add the colour as an edit afterwards. More angles in our gender reveal photo ideas.
  10. Let the pet watch the screen. Many pets ignore it completely, and that is fine. Keep them nearby on the sofa while the family finds out online, and keep the volume low.

Dog or cat: small differences

  • Dogs often enjoy being included, so treats you already know are safe and a calm "sit" can help. Keep the session upbeat and short.
  • Cats choose their own moments. Set up the scene, leave the camera ready, and wait for the cat to wander in. Never hold a cat in place for a photo.
  • Shy or older pets may prefer to be off camera. A bowl, a bed or a paw outline can stand in for them.
  • Several pets? Reveal one at a time so nobody is crowded.

Now tell the family, all at once

A cute pet photo is lovely, but if you post it in a family chat, someone sees it first and the surprise leaks. Better: pick one moment and let everyone find out together. With Diaper Reveal you make a free party, share a link or a 6-letter code, and relatives join from their phone with no app and no account. When the time comes, everyone sees the result at the same second, wherever they live. The full setup is in how to host a gender reveal online.

  1. Do the pet moment first. Take your photo or short clip early, while your pet is calm.
  2. Keep the result hidden until the online moment. Do not post the pet photo yet.
  3. Send the link and code with the date and time, and the time zone for relatives abroad.
  4. Reveal live. Everyone finds out together, and you can post the pet photo straight after.
  5. Post it with a caption. Ideas in our gender reveal announcement captions.

After the party, the host is emailed a short memory film. It is free to download for 14 days, and $5 a year keeps it, a nice place to keep the pet photo with everyone's reactions.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to include my dog or cat in a gender reveal?

Yes, if it is calm and short. Avoid loud bangs, powders, smoke, food made for people and costumes your pet dislikes. If you are unsure about anything your pet will touch or eat, ask your vet.

Can my pet eat a pink or blue cake or treat?

Do not give a pet cake or sweets made for people. If you want a coloured pet treat, ask your vet what is suitable for your animal.

What if my pet hates wearing a bandana or costume?

Then skip it. Use a sign beside them, a coloured bed throw or bowl, or a photo where they are simply sitting nearby. Never force anything on a pet.

How do I make sure family finds out at the same time?

Keep the pet photo private, then share one link or 6-letter code for a short online reveal. Everyone joins from their phone, with no app, and sees the result together.

Do relatives need to install anything or make an account?

No. They tap the link or type the 6-letter code on the join page, on a phone, tablet or laptop. It is free for guests.
