Gender Reveal by Text Message: Copy-and-Paste Messages That Work on SMS and iMessage
Some of the people who matter most never open a group chat app. They read texts. Here is how to give them a real reveal, not a spoiler, with one link and a message you can copy.

Short answer: send one text with a link and a set time. Everyone opens the link on their phone at the same moment, with no app and no account, and finds out together. A text works on any phone, so it reaches the grandparents, aunts and uncles who never joined the family group chat.
Most reveal advice assumes everyone uses WhatsApp or a video call. In plenty of families that is not true. Some relatives only ever read texts, and that is fine: a text is the most universal invitation there is.
Why a text beats a photo
If you text a photo of the result, people see it whenever they next look at their phone. One finds out at breakfast, one at midnight, and someone replies with the answer before the others have opened the picture. A link and a start time fixes that: nobody sees anything until the moment you choose.
Three messages to copy and paste
Write the link as plain text in the message, not inside a picture, so it is one tap. If your relatives are in different time zones, put the time in both, for example "7pm London / 2pm New York".
SMS or iMessage: does it matter?
Not for this. Both carry a link, and the link opens in the phone's browser either way. iMessage tends to show a small preview card and SMS shows a plain link, so keep the message itself clear enough that nobody has to guess what the link is. In a mixed group of iPhones and Android phones, a short message with the link written out works for everyone.
Set it up in five steps
- Decide who knows. Give the ultrasound result or the sealed envelope to one trusted person, or keep it secret until the reveal.
- Create your party on Diaper Reveal. It is free for hosts and guests and takes a few minutes.
- Copy the invite message. On the invite screen, the Text button opens your messages app with the invitation already written, so you only choose who to send it to.
- Test it with your least tech-confident relative a day or two before. If they can open it, everyone can.
- Start on time and keep it short. Twenty to thirty minutes is plenty. Ask one person to screenshot the reactions.

Frequently asked questions
Can I do a gender reveal by text message?
Yes. Send a text with a link to your online reveal and a start time. Everyone taps the link on their phone at the same moment, so nobody is told early.
Do guests need an app or an account?
No. They open the link in their phone's browser, or enter the 6-character code, and join straight away.
Does it work on both iPhone and Android?
Yes. The link opens in the browser on any modern phone, so SMS, iMessage and mixed groups all work.
What if a relative can't open the link?
Reply to their text or call them and read the 6-character code aloud, then have them type it in. You can also send them the memory video afterwards.
Is it free?
Creating a party and joining one is free for hosts and guests.
